The Odyssey

This is the masterpiece from my practical exam as glazier master in May 2008. I decided to make an art object and gave myself the topic „Greek Mythology“, especially the legend of the Odyssey. I had the idea, to make a ship. But it´s not completely made of glass: The ship´s keel is made of black lacquered wood. The hull is outlined by altogether 30 small glass plates. I grinded and polished the edges of each single plate by hand. The two front plates show the carved portraits Odysseus and the goddess Athene. The carvings are followed by sandblasted, simplyfied portraits, which are getting smaler. I fixed the glass plates on each side of the keel with uv-glue (...and nobody wanted to believe, that it work,...but it did!).

Amazing. And very likely to provoke Poseidon's jealousy.

I hope you post some larger pictures of the details.

Thanks! Already done!
I hope you´re able to see the details. It´s not easy, to take good photos of glass, because of the reflexions.

Beautiful! Such an original idea - I have never seen anything like it.
